Jackson City Council votes to honor slain JSU student | #citycouncil


The Jackson City Council passed a resolution Tuesday to honor a Jackson State University student who was shot and killed at an on-campus apartment during Homecoming weekend.The vote was originally for an ordinance to place a memorial sign in honor of Jaylen Burns on Valley Street, the same street that the University Pointe apartment complex is where Burns was killed on Sunday, Oct. 15.Burns’ parents said he was trying to break up a fight at an apartment when he was shot.The council voted unanimously on a resolution to honor Burns. One of the other ideas, besides a memorial sign, was to honor him by declaring a Jaylen Burns Day. Another proposal was to build a memorial garden on JSU’s campus.Burns’ parents attended the city council meeting.
