Jackson City Council to review bids on garbage collection | #citycouncil

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – The Jackson City Council will soon be looking at request for proposals (RFP) to make a final decision on what company will collect trash for the city in the next six years.

Leaders have just a couple of months to make a decision. The city is currently under an emergency contract with Richard’s Disposal, which will end on March 31, 2024.

After years of discourse, leaders hope to move forward while doing what’s best for the citizens.

“We don’t know, you know, the mechanisms of the what’s going to be presented. And the main thing is we got to look at the service that’s going to be provided to the citizens and the calls. And so, you know, the sooner the better, so that we can begin to get those things in front of us and try to see if we can make a decision to have a permanent solution before the end of March,” said City Council President Aaron Banks, Ward 6.

Proposals have moved past the review committee and are expected to be presented to the City Council in the upcoming weeks.

“I hope everything works out. I hope we don’t have to go through the same thing that we dealt with last year, and there’s been enough time where we shouldn’t have to go through that. I do understand that there are only two companies that applied for or bid it on it,” said James Hopkins with Reset Jackson.

During this RPF period, only two companies submitted a bid. One of them is Richard’s Disposal.

Banks said he’s hopeful that the Council will make a decision before the end of March.

The company that receives the garbage contract will service the city from April 2024 to September 2030.
