Jackson residents should be getting a little money back from the city.The city council approved a garbage collection rebate on Tuesday for residents who were charged for garbage pickup without getting the service during the last standoff with Richard’s Disposal. The lowest rebate should be $12.53.Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba said the city is still in the midst of a legal fight over who collects garbage in Jackson. A federal judge could set the tone for where the city goes next — either keeping Richard’s Disposal or finding a new contractor.“There is an appeal right now. Our City Attorney’s Office has motioned that we better understand the date the court might make a decision. Once we know this, I think that liberates us to move in either direction,” Lumumba said. The city said the garbage collection rebates have been approved and will now move to applying it to the bills of customers who were on the rolls during the garbage collection crisis. City officials couldn’t say when residents can expect to see the rebates.
