FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – With cold freezing rains and low temps icing the roads in Northwest Arkansas on Monday and sleet and snow on tap for Tuesday, the odds of having the game against Texas A&M in Bud Walton isn’t 100 percent.
Generally, the rule of thumb is to have the game if it can be played regardless of fans. If the Razorbacks and Aggies have to play in front of an empty building, then so be it.
Weather reports call for significant icing to begin at 11 a.m. Tuesday as a mix of sleet and freezing rain builds for about two and a half hours on top of whatever will have fallen by night’s end Monday evening.
Then, another two hours of heavy snow showers are expected to fall on top of that with temps maxing out at 25 degrees. Anything melted by the heat of vehicles will freeze right back into a frozen sheet of glass.
If Texas A&M can safely get in the building before all of this happens, the odds of having a game go up significantly. All that is needed at that point are at least two referees who can somehow get into Bud Walton.
As for the Aggies getting out of College Station safely, while it is an absolute disaster zone in the Dallas area, a little over two hours to the southeast, the temperatures have hovered just above freezing, keeping the moisture in the air in liquid form.
This means that if the regional airport in Northwest Arkansas can make its runways safe, getting the Texas A&M team to Fayetteville should be a given.
So, let’s suppose only one sanctioned NCAA referee makes it to campus. What would happen next?
There’s technically an option to not play a game at all. The season would go on and nothing would change.
However, considering tie-breakers and that it’s two teams with NCAA Tournament aspirations, the SEC would be determined to get it done.
The most logical date is the Monday following the regular season. Unless something terrible happens the rest of the way, neither team should be in danger of having to play on Wednesday night in the opening round of the SEC Tournament.
That means both could play, get plenty of rest before either a Thursday or Friday game, and have seedings settled in time to make adjustments at the conference level.
Most likely there will be a game Tuesday night despite the nastiness outside. There are plenty of options for those who can’t get to the game to donate their tickets to students on campus.
Consider it a charitable donation and enjoy possibly seeing whether a two-person officiating crew manages the game differently than three-person crews from the warmth and safety of your own home.
