The Sports car is inspired by the 1968 Mustang California, which itself was inspired by the 1967 Shelby GT.
You see, when Ford Mustang and consequently the California Special was produced, the steam of the pony car competition between automakers was at its hottest — in a bid to stand out and offer automakers something unique, many regional dealers were creating personalized Ford Mustangs.
California Ford dealers designed the California Special, a Ford Mustang distinguishable from the standard Mustangs.
Though they fell short of the intended production numbers of 5,500 (only 4,118 were made), still, the car gained tremendous public interest in the United States. California was responsible for the sale of 20% of all Mustangs sold, so it wasn’t hard for the state dealers to push the brand.
What’s New With The European California Special?
Ford introduced some new design cues in this new California Special for the European market: a honeycomb front grille with the CT/CS badge sitting on it, stripes that extend from the front to the rear wings finished black, gray, and red. The GT/CS logos are generously used on the car.
The model will sport a fish gills accent light and sequential LED backlight. Ford will also give it a standout blacked-out grille, optional rear side air scoop, and side racing stripes that extend from the front to just before the rear side-venting giving it a serious muscle car look. Inside the new California Special will be Suede-trimmed luxury leather seats with red stitching matched with a black miko® Suede door inserts; heated and cooled front seats for functionality in every weather condition. The GT/CS logo is boldly visible on the seats and floor mats.
The front seats are comfortable to sit on no matter your body max; we can’t say the same for the passenger’s seat as they are too small for adults. The instrument panel is perfected with Carbon Hex aluminum and also wears the California Special badge.
The Ford Mustang California Special on the European market has larger wheels: 19 × 9-inch wheels in front and a 19 × 9.5-inch wheel at the rear and finished in Carbonized gray to compliment the front splitter, rear diffuser, and the side skirts.
Ford plans to make it available in eight different colors: Eruption Green, Cyber Orange, Atlas Blue, Carbonized Gray, Dark Matter, Iconic Silver, Shadow Black, and Grabber Blue Metallic. The roofs will come in contrasting black no matter the car’s color.

Two transmission options are available on the California special: the 10-speed automatic and a standard six-speed manual with rev-matching technology.

The Ford Mustang California Special can sprint from 0-60 miles per hour in 4.5 or 4.8 seconds, depending on the transmission of the car — the manual transmission have the better time.
