The Great California ShakeOut — the tour bringing a magnitude 7.0 earthquake simulator to cities across the state over the next week — arrived Thursday in San Francisco as the governor’s Office of Emergency Services touts its first-in-the-nation early warning system for temblors. California’s early earthquake warning system can be downloaded to smartphones via the MyShake app at https://myshake.berkeley.edu/
Passersby and simulator riders also received emergency preparedness materials and tips at the event at San Francisco State University, which is one of seven stops the state organized starting Wednesday in Sacramento and heading next to Monterey on Friday. Beyond that the tour will visit Santa Barbara on Oct. 16, Los Angeles on Oct. 17, Riverside on Oct. 18 and conclude in San Diego on Oct. 19.
As the tour wraps on what the Office of Emergency Services is calling the Great California ShakeOut Day, millions of Californians are invited to take part in an earthquake drill at 10:19 a.m. Oct. 19.
Life-saving actions to take during an earthquake:
Inside: Drop, cover and hold on
In a car: Pull over, stop, set the parking brake.
In bed: Turn facedown, cover your head with a pillow.
Outdoors: Stay away from buildings, don’t go inside.
