Girl dies after icy crash in north Arkansas

A minor girl died in the early morning hours of Wednesday after the vehicle she was riding in lost control on the ice and crashed into a concrete culvert in far north Arkansas.

According to a state police fatal crash report, the unidentified female died after the Chevrolet Silverado 2500 she was a passenger in left the ice-covered roadway and struck a concrete box culvert in rural Fulton County.

The driver was traveling on Arkansas Highway 289, just south of Mammoth Spring, when the truck crossed over the center line and left the east side of the highway before hitting the culvert shortly after 1 a.m., the preliminary report detailed.

The report said the truck turned on its side following the crash, partially ejecting the girl who was seated in the backseat.

Nearly all of Arkansas roads have been frozen under ice since a winter storm Sunday.

Local and state law enforcement agencies have been warning motorists to stay off the roads, cautioning that roadways could remain dangerous through the weekend.

A 59-year-old Arkansas man died Sunday after colliding with a tree during the snowstorm in rural White County.

This marks the 16th fatal crash the Arkansas State Police is investigating this year.
