Fruehling wins mayor essay contest | The Hawk Eye – Burlington, Iowa

Ava Fruehling, a seventh-grader at Notre Dame School is the Burlington winner of the “If I Were Mayor…” essay contest hosted by the Iowa League of Cities.

Each year, the City of Burlington partners with local schools, with the winning essay moving on to the state level to represent Burlington and local youth.

For the assignment, seventh-grade students are asked to write essays on what they would do if they were mayor.

The essays are judged based on creativity, clarity, sincerity of thought and proper use of grammar.

In addition to Ava’s essay getting submitted to the state, she will be awarded a $100 cash prize, sponsored by Burlington Rotary Club, and will be recognized at the City Council meeting on Monday, Feb. 6.

Ava’s essay had a central theme of food scarcity and the effects on families and students.

The City of Burlington is hosting a food drive until Monday, Feb. 6, in Ava’s name.

Food items can be taken to City Hall at 400 Washington St. during business hours and will be given to local pantries.
