The Racial Justice Network, alongside family and friends, marched Saturday from the site where Saudi Lee was shot and killed in June to Savannah’s City Hall demanding justice over the police shooting death of Lee.“This is like American carnage in the city of Savannah. Too much innocent blood is being shed in the streets of Savannah,” said one of the protestors. According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigations, officers were patrolling an area near Gwinnett and Crosby streets when they spotted Lee walking in the middle of the road.Officers approached the 31-year-old to speak with him. That’s when, they say, Lee immediately showed his wallet, saying it contained his weapons permit and then lifted his shirt and pulled a weapon from a holster.A short chase ensued, and Lee was fatally shot by an officer.“I’m sick and tired of hearing families trying to justify that they were walking on the sidewalk and not in the middle of the street,” another protestor said. “I don’t care where they were walking! Walking does not give an authority to shoot my brother.”Protestors are demanding the release of the officers’ body and dash cam videos, a fair investigation and the resignation of Mayor Van Johnson. “As a Black man, knowing the struggle. Knowing the history of police shooting Black men. And he’s said nothing about none of it. None of it,” said James Johnson, CEO of the Racial Justice Network.“Vote him out, or he needs to resign,” James Johnson said. “Today, we’re calling for your resignation. We’re calling you out right now. We are tired and we’re not gonna take no more,” said protestor Alan Mainor.WJCL reached out to Mayor Van Johnson for a response. He said he has no plans to resign. He added that he feels the Racial Justice Network is “oblivious to the daily work this community does to ensure the safety of everyone in our great city.”
