HUGHES, Ark. – Last July Cortez Bowers was appointed police chief of Hughes, Arkansas. After a month, he’s no longer leading the department. FOX13 explained why his tenure may have been cut short.
What would you do if the police chief tried to fight you at your house and the mayors office? That’s exactly what one man in Hughes, Arkansas said happened to him.
“Cory Weems, the biggest snitch around here, the biggest snitch.” Williams, does not want to show his face on camera, but said that the police chief is accusing him of being a snitch because he filed a formal complaint with the city of Hughes accusing this chief of assault and harassment.
“We are men, you can come out here like men and we can handle it at this point. All you want to do is sit here, antagonize, provoke. Throw a rock and hide your hand,” said Bowers.
Williams said this was his last encounter with the now former Hughes Police Chief Cortez Bowers, but it’s not the first.
He claimed Bower stopped him last December, found some marijuana on him, but rather than haul him to jail.; he claims Bowers took some of his marijuana and stole hundred dollars from him. He said Bowers stopped him again in January, found marijuana on him.
But this time things played out differently.
“Brought me up to City Hall, I guess he was calling his cousin Officer star to come up here and jump me like they did somebody else. And I started making jokes about his cousin and he walked up and slapped me. And ever since then it’s been a problem,” said Weems.
Why discussing Bowers alleged harassment of him. Bowers can’t be seen attempting to breach of America office. The mayor released this statement regarding the incident.
“At the time of the incident (captured on video on 4-4-2024) Mr. Bowers was formally separated from the City of Hughes Police Department and was no longer in-service as Chief of Police”. Statement from Hughes Mayor Lincoln E. Barnett.
We reached out to Arkansas state police to learn whether Bowers is under investigation.
