Current Dublin Vice Mayor Jean Josey is running to earn a second term on the Dublin City Council in a three-candidate race for two seats in the November general election.
Josey, who was first elected for the position in 2018, identified several key issues that she believes are important to voters this election, including growth, parks and recreation, safety and economic development.
“I am running for re-election for Dublin City Council, because while I am very proud of the work that our council has done in the last four years, there is more work to be done,” Josey said. “I have always prioritized quality-of-life issues for our residents, and over the last four years.”
With two at-large council positions up for election, Josey is on the ballot against former planning commissioner Lynna Lan Tien Nguyen Do and current Planning Commission alternate member Kashef Qaadri. Councilmember Shawn Kumagai, who was eligible for re-election, is not running as instead he’s a candidate in the runoff for State Assembly District 20.
In her time serving on the City Council, Josey noted her contributions to city projects such as the Cultural Arts Center, the Downtown Preferred Vision, and the introduction of a behavioral health unit within the Dublin Police Department.
On the issue of housing, Josey is aiming to introduce both flexible and beneficial housing options to new residents while continuing to serve current locals in the area.
“I will continue doing all I can to ensure that these additional housing developments are the right mix of unit types and affordability so that we aren’t overburdening our infrastructure,” said Josey. “I will continue to push for opportunities to create more affordable units for our public servants and service workers, those just starting their careers and our seniors.”
Josey previously served on a number of boards, including the Tri-Valley Transportation Committee and the Alameda County Library Advisory Commission. Prior to joining the council, Josey was the recipient of the 2016 Dublin Citizen of the Year award.
If re-elected, Josey said she plans to continue advocating for Dublin parks and recreational areas.
“Dublin is the jewel of the Tri-Valley when it comes to parks. I will continue to grow our wonderful programs, without overspending our budget,” Josey told the Weekly. “I will make decisions that are both fiscally responsible and socially responsive to the needs of our residents.”
Josey said she feels it is important to offer a high quality of life to the citizens of Dublin through resources and planning. This entails adequate housing choices that serve diverse populations, from families to young adults to service workers, as well as the addition of recreational areas, mental health and public safety assets, and economic development incentives for businesses.
“My experience on City Council, and the relationships I have already built within the Tri-Valley, as well as at the state and national level, makes me the right candidate,” Josey said.
