Des Moines City Council approves $19.5M bridge replacement


The city of Des Moines is moving forward with a plan to replace the Walnut Street Bridge, despite some disagreements from leaders.The council voted Monday to spend $19.5 million dollars to replace the aging bridge in Downtown Des Moines.However, some council members argue the space would be better used as a pedestrian bridge, or even a park.Others say pausing the work would be premature, as the East Village and Market District continue to grow.
