CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman City Council this week approved resolutions to place a new traffic light at the intersection of U.S. Highway 278 and Interstate 65 on the city’s west side, and to rezone a business and manufacturing district on the northside for residential development.

The council voted to enter into an agreement with the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) to install a traffic control signal at the downtown’s closest interstate access point.  According to the City Engineer’s Office, ALDOT determined the proposed traffic light to be necessary based on a recent traffic study.

The council also voted to rezone a large parcel of property on the northeast side of the U.S. Highway 31/Alabama Highway 157 intersection from business and manufacturing to residential, despite concerns from a local resident about the potential impact of development of the site on traffic and infrastructure. The new R-4 zoning designation allows a range of construction, from single-family homes to apartment complexes. The developer must next submit plans to the City Planning Commission.

The council also approved:

  • A special event permit for an Our Lady of Guadalupe procession from St. Bernard Abbey to Sacred Heart School at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 9, 2023
  • An agreement with EPR Systems USA, Inc. to provide records management services for Cullman Fire Rescue
  • The Severe Weather Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday from Feb. 23-25, 2024, and on the last full weekend of February in the future

The council set a public hearing to rezone property belonging to Blue Hole, LLC on U.S. Highway 278 from AG-2 to AG-1 on Jan. 8, 2024, and held first readings of ordinances to annex properties on County Road 1188 and County Road 468.

The Cullman City Council meets at 7 p.m. on the second and fourth Monday of each month at Cullman City Hall. The public is invited to attend.
