Craig Greenberg, Bill Dieruf vie for Louisville mayor in 2022 election

Republican Bill Dieruf and Democrat Craig Greenberg are facing off Tuesday to decide who will serve as the next mayor of Louisville.

Dieruf, 67, the mayor of suburban Jeffersontown since 2010, and Greenberg, 49, a lawyer by training who is the former CEO of 21c Museum Hotels and a co-owner of Ohio Valley Wrestling, are seeking to succeed Mayor Greg Fischer, a Democrat who has served since 2011 and is limited by law from running for a fourth term in office.

Though it was widely expected that the race will come down to the candidates from the two major parties, several third-party candidates were also running in Tuesday’s election.

Dieruf has campaigned on his existing mayoral experience in Jeffersontown and, like Greenberg, has made public safety and reducing violent crime in Louisville a priority, also touting his “nonpartisan” work and support from both Republicans and Democrats alike. Greenberg noted the issue of gun violence in Kentucky’s largest city became personal for him after police said Quintez Brown fired shots at the candidate inside his campaign office in February.

Greenberg, who vastly outraised and outspent Dieruf during the campaign, has pledged to build a “safer, stronger and healthier” Louisville and improve the city as soon he takes office, arguing that although he lacks political experience, his resume as a developer and partner with 21c who helped revitalize downtown’s Whiskey Row and service on the boards of organizations like the University of Louisville is proof of his ability to work with a mix of people in the public and private spheres.
