Community to mourn late Mayor Tom Henry’s death at funeral, procession today | Local Government

People across Allen County and beyond today will honor the life of the late Mayor Tom Henry.

Henry died March 28 after announcing his late-stage stomach cancer diagnosis a month earlier. Henry had served as the mayor since 2008 and was sworn in for a fifth term in January.

Gov. Eric Holcomb has directed the county to fly flags at half-staff from sunrise until sunset today, a news release said. He asked businesses and residents in Allen County to lower their flags as well.

Henry’s funeral is at 10 a.m. today at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in downtown Fort Wayne, with visitation from 9 to 10 a.m. in the church. The service is set to be livestreamed online at www.cathedralfortwayne.org.

The funeral will be followed by a procession that will wrap around downtown before heading to the Catholic Cemetery.

The procession is expected to start between 11:15 and 11:45 a.m., Fort Wayne police said in a news release. Several streets will be closed downtown to make way for the vehicles.

The procession will travel:

• North on Calhoun Street to West Superior Street

• West on Superior to Wells Street

• North on Wells to East Fourth Street

• East on Fourth to North Clinton Street

• South on Clinton over the Martin Luther King Jr. Bridge and past Citizens Square to East Wayne Street

• East on Wayne to Lafayette Street

• North on Lafayette over the Veterans Memorial Bridge to Spy Run

• North on Spy Run to East State Boulevard

• East on State to Hobson Road

• South on Hobson to Lake Avenue

• East on Lake to the Catholic Cemetery

Military rites will be performed for Henry at the cemetery.

Hundreds of people attended Henry’s visitation at the Allen County Courthouse rotunda Wednesday and Thursday.

Henry’s death has left a vacancy in the mayor’s office. Karl Bandemer, who was Henry’s deputy mayor, is serving as acting mayor until an Allen County Democratic Party caucus will elect a replacement on April 20.
