Commentary: A call to action for North Charleston Mayor-elect Reggie Burgess | Commentary

We write today with a heart full of hope and anticipation as we usher in a new era under the leadership of North Charleston Mayor-elect Reggie Burgess. His commitment to public service and dedication to the betterment of our community have not gone unnoticed, and we are confident that his tenure will bring positive and transformative change to our beloved city.

As we embark on this journey together, it is essential to recognize the challenges that lie ahead and articulate a vision for progress. The city of North Charleston stands at a crossroads, and our collective efforts can shape its future in profound ways.

One crucial aspect of our shared mission is the revitalization of historic black neighborhoods. The Berkeley-Charleston-Dorchester Council of Government “predicts limited job growth in the study area (approximately 200 jobs)” over the next decade. These communities are the backbone of our city, rich with culture and history. We must approach revitalization with sensitivity, ensuring that development efforts do not lead to gentrification. Rather, let us focus on inclusive strategies that empower existing residents and businesses, preserving the character that makes these neighborhoods unique.

Equally vital is the need for comprehensive youth recreational activities in underserved communities. Access to high-quality recreational programs fosters a sense of community, provides constructive outlets for our youth and contributes to their overall well-being.

By investing in these programs, we invest in the future of North Charleston, nurturing the potential of our young minds and bodies.

In tandem with this, we must champion inclusion and diversity in all aspects of city development. Economic growth should not leave any community behind. We urge Mayor-elect Burgess to ensure that economic development and capital improvement projects embrace diversity, creating opportunities for all residents to participate and benefit. We further urge him to follow the policy recommendations for 30% affordable housing and 30% minority business participation at the former Charleston Naval Base.

To truly address the economic disparities in our city, we must focus on recruiting companies that not only provide living-wage jobs but also actively engage in training and hiring from North Charleston’s poorer communities. This approach not only uplifts individuals but strengthens the fabric of our entire community. It’s a win-win situation that builds a more sustainable and equitable future.

As Mayor-elect Burgess takes the reins of our city, we are confident that he will lead with integrity, empathy and a vision for unity. Let us work together to make North Charleston a beacon of progress, where every resident has the opportunity to thrive. The challenges may be great, but so is our collective potential.

Congratulations to Mayor-elect Burgess. The city is with him, ready to build a future we can all be proud of.
