Columbia mayor calls for formation of Office of Violence Prevention | Mid-Missouri News

COLUMBIA — Columbia Mayor Barbara Buffaloe is requesting the formation of city-wide Office of Violence Prevention.

In an opinion article for the Columbia Missourian, Buffaloe said she will file the request with City Manager De’Carlon Seewood on Monday.

The office will partner with public safety offices, community violence intervention programs and neighborhood voices to advance violence prevention, according to the article.

In her writing, Buffaloe cited a Sept. 24 shooting that left a 3-year-old dead.

“It will take the support of the entire community to make this work,” Buffaloe wrote. “Together we can all do something to make Columbia a safer community. Together we can support one another so that no one has to receive a call about a child being killed with a gun.”

This comes after President Joe Biden announced the formation of the first-ever White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention on Sept. 21.
