Colbert County primary elections provide two new superintendent candidates | #elections | #alabama

COLBERT CO., Ala. (WAFF) – In Colbert County, two Republican candidates are competing to be the next superintendent of Colbert County Schools.

Primary Elections are Tuesday and that means candidates are hard at work to show their cause.

“I want to continue to grow our kids academically and making sure that they’re getting that firm foundation and growing our people as well,” Mize said. “Making sure our teachers’ needs are met too.”

Heather Mize is one of the candidates running for the position. She has 16 years of experience as an educator and currently works for Tuscumbia City Schools as Career Technical Director.

“It’s important for the community because we’re sending, they’re our future,” Mize said. “You know, we’re sending those kids out into the workforce. So if they’re not prepared for the work force, they’re not prepared at that school level, then they’re not going to be successful. They can be, but they’re better prepared.”

Mize said she wants to focus heavily on preparing students for the future through career tech and dual enrollment.

The other candidate is Nathan Fuller. He said he has been in the Colbert County school systems for all but three years of his life as a student and faculty member.

“And I want to see them thrive academically, athletically and in everything that we do,” Fuller said. “We want to do it as well as we possibly can and we want to shine and show what a great place this is. And what great teachers and what great communities and families we have in this county.”

Fuller said he wants to build a stable foundation at the elementary level. He said if students have a good foundation then they will be ready for the next step in their lives.

He said he wants to also make sure that the school system strengthens their relationship with surrounding colleges and programs to ensure the students have a future in their community.

“I just want the kids that come from our school to have the opportunity to do anything that they want to do,” Fuller said. “Nothing that’s off the table for them. They can do anything they choose to do with the foundation that they have.”

Both candidates said to get out and vote even if you do not have a child in the system, as these children of the future of the community.

There is a Democratic candidate as well. Lymos McDonald is the only Democratic candidate running. He currently works for the Colbert County School system as the District COVID and Special Assignments Officer for the office of Superintendent Chris Hand.
