A member of the Clinton County Legislature has announced his candidacy as the next mayor of the city of Plattsburgh.Democrat Wendell Hughes held a press conference on Wednesday morning at the Clinton County Government Center to announce his official bid to become the next mayor of Plattsburgh.He is running to replace Chris Rosenquest, who announced last week that he would not seek reelection this year.Hughes was elected in 2020 to Represent Area 8 of the county, which covers parts of both the City and Town of Plattsburgh, and currently chairs the legislature’s Health Committee. Prior to his political career, Hughes served as a corrections officer for over three decades in Altona. Additionally, he is actively involved in the North Country Honor Flight program.Hughes aims to bridge gaps and find common ground with city councilors if elected. “Going forward, I think I can be a positive influence on the council. And I think we can work together. There’s got to be compromises,” Hughes said. The Plattsburgh City Democrats have expressed their enthusiasm for Hughes’ candidacy, praising his qualifications and consensus-building skills. Sue Moore, Chair of the Plattsburgh City Democratic Committee, said, “Wendell’s a great guy, I’ve known him for a few years now. He’s got the qualifications for sure. I think he’s a consensus builder. I think that’s going to be a big thing compared to the way things have gone in the last few years.”Meanwhile, City Republicans are still in the process of identifying a candidate who aligns with their priorities. David J. Souliere, Chair of the Plattsburgh City Republican Committee, emphasized the importance of promoting issues such as affordable housing, youth recreation access, public safety, and addressing the migrant crisis.Hughes has outlined housing and recreation as top priorities if elected, expressing confidence in his ability to effect positive change. “My goal is to be here in four years and say, ‘hey, look what we’ve done, look what we’ve done.’ And that’s essentially what I want to be,” Hughes said.With no other candidates having declared their intentions for the mayoral race, the final list of contenders won’t be set until this spring, ahead of the November election.
