City of Plaquemine mayor to retire at end of 2024

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — After serving as mayor for over seven years, City of Plaquemine Mayor Edwin “Ed” Reeves Jr. is retiring at the end of the year.

Reeves, who has been in public service for over 30 years, announced his retirement on Tuesday, Feb. 20.

“I would like to take this opportunity to announce my retirement from public service at the end of the current year,” said Reeves. “In my 35 years of public service, including my last seven plus as mayor, I have never asked for anything for myself. The health, safety and welfare of the City of Plaquemine and our residents has always been my foremost concern and consideration in all decisions.”

According to the city’s social media post, some of his accomplishments as mayor include:

  • Completing a massive upgrade of the city park.
  • Updated the city’s emergency preparedness plan.
  • Purchased the property and built the Fort Area Park.
  • Made repairs to city-owned facilities in the downtown historic district.
  • Negotiated contracts to overlay city streets that were in horrible condition.

“I am proud of all that has been accomplished during my years of service to our city and the parish,” he said. “I was first elected to the Plaquemine Board of Selectmen in 1989 and was in my fourth term when elected to the Parish Council. I was also in my fourth term on the Parish Council when I was elected mayor in late 2016, and assumed office in January 2017.”
