MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Raising money for Memphis students is how Junior Achievement spent Saturday with help from people who love to bowl.

The 38th annual Bowl-a-Thon happened with appearances from Memphis Mayor Paul Young and Interim Memphis Police Chief C.J. Davis a day after losing a Memphis Police officer in the line of duty.

It was an example of Memphis coming together after tragedy to support an organization that’s not giving up on the future.

A day after the shooting death of Memphis Police Officer Joseph McKinney, Mayor Young and Interim Chief Davis along with MPD officers and community members decide to bowl for a cause.

They were helping to raise money for Junior Achievement, an organization that helps young people discover the tools they need to be successful.

Leigh Mansberg, president and CEO of Junior Achievement Memphis, said that even after such a tragic day, partnerships are still working to help the youth.

“And that is what our city officers believe in,” Mansberg said. “And they believe in hope for our children. And we all know that only light drives out the darkness.”

Young said it’s opportunities such as Saturday’s event to pour into the youth that will bring Memphis together while navigating through mourning the loss of one Memphis’s finest.

“You know, our city is still healing and it’s going to take some time,” Young said. “But we’re going to come together as one unit and we’ll all support that family and support our city.”
