City Council To Discuss Whether To Change From At-Large To District Elections | #citycouncil

The Tracy City Council at its meeting Tuesday will discuss whether the city should hold district-based elections rather than with its current at-large method.

Tracy right now elects a mayor to a two-year term with a limit of two terms along with four councilmembers who are elected by city voters at large for four-year terms with a two-term limit.

Many cities around the state have moved to district-based elections to avoid possible lawsuits brought under the California Voting Rights Act alleging racially polarized voting.

According to a staff report for Tuesday’s meeting, Tracy City Councilmember Dan Arriola called for the council to discuss whether Tracy should be the latest city to make that move.

If the council chooses to proceed with the change, there would be a process involving at least three public hearings and consultation with a demographer to determine maps for the districts.

The council meeting is set for 7 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall, 333 Civic Center Plaza in Tracy. People can also watch the meeting on the city’s website at CityofTracy.org or on Comcast channel 26/AT&T U-verse channel 99.
