The Sacramento City Council is meeting on Tuesday and will consider creative ways to fund the expansion of the Sacramento Valley Station. Some city leaders want it to be transformed into a multi-mode transportation hub, which would be a $70 million project. The funds will help build a state-of-the-art transportation hub and give commuters more options for public transit.City leaders said they see it as an opportunity for growth because the Sacramento Valley Station is the seventh busiest Amtrak train station located at the heart of a development area.To take advantage of this regional hub, they want to expand Sacramento Valley Station to serve multiple modes of transportation: from intercity passenger rail, bus services and a hub for regional light rail service, bus service and bike and pedestrian trails.Plans include expanding 3rd Street into the Sacramento Valley Station. It currently dead-ends at the Interstate 5 on-ramp. They want to move the on-ramp as a part of the new I Street Bridge.The project would allow the Sacramento Valley Station to build a Regional Bus Mobility Center and give buses easy access to I-5.The Sacramento City Council will request the grant from the federal government.If the project moves forward, the city will work with Caltrans to make the expansion a reality.The Sacramento City Council meeting gets underway at 5 p.m.
