City Council to Consider July Soccer Match in Rose Bowl – Pasadena Now | #citycouncil

The Pasadena City Council on Monday will vote whether to authorize Rose Bowl General Manager Jens Weiden to negotiate and enter into a license agreement with AEG to host one soccer match in July at the Rose Bowl.

“The RBOC [Rose Bowl Operating Company] has the opportunity to host one soccer match with AEG in July 2024. AEG, owner of the LA Galaxy which used to play at the Rose Bowl, is the RBOC’s soccer partner on all matches at the stadium. The attendance for the event is expected to be approximately 60,000-65,000 people.”

The Rose Bowl has hosted several sold out soccer matches this year. On July 4, 82,110 fans attended the match between the LA Galaxy and the Los Angeles Football Club. The crowd was a new Major League Soccer single-match standalone attendance record.

It is not known if the match will be held on July 4.

The soccer match would be the 19th “displacement event” in 2024. The first 18 displacement events in 2024 are: six scheduled UCLA football games, the Rose Bowl Game, 10 Music Festival dates, and one soccer match with Soccer United Marketing.

The Arroyo Public Lands Ordinance limits the number of displacement events the stadium can host without City Council approval at 15.

According to a staff report in Monday’s agenda, the event would generate tremendous publicity for the City and the stadium, would generate in excess of $300,000 for the RBOC and additional funds for the City.

“It is anticipated that the event will not create undue conflicts with Arroyo Seco activities taking place at the same time.”

Staff will work closely with the Parks and Natural Resources Division of the City of Pasadena, as well as the Pasadena Police Department to best control the displacement of other activities in the Arroyo Seco,” according to the staff report.
