City Council Public Services Committee Takes Double-Look into the Future | #citycouncil

The Danville City Council Public Services Committee will be taking a double look into the future Tuesday night.  First, there’s the consideration of an agreement with Kirchner Building Centers for their planned move to the old Goodwood Building that they’ve purchased on the northwest corner of Fairchild and Gilbert.
Kirchner’s current location is 508 West Williams near the Carle at the Riverfront project.

In order to help Kirchner move their entire operation to the old Goodwill spot, the city would acquire 10 properties along Gilbert and Robinson Streets, and then transfer them to Kirchner.  City Engineer Sam Cole says letters were sent out to the property owners Monday, and that some are owner-occupied and some are in a landlord-tenant situation.  Cole says, yes, this will take some time; hopefully about a year or so.

AUDIO: We would be clearing that land out so that Kirchner could build a lumber store, warehousing, other facilities; to help keep them in town and meet their long term needs.  Really, this was a chance to get them in a better situation in town, where they’re more visible.

Another project being talked about is all on paper for now, but it’s the next step in the renovation for both Garfield Park and Garfield Pool; approved by the City Council as a major portion of the city’s APRA COVID relief funding.  Cole says early on it was focusing on the pool with the original master plan.

AUDIO: And that was to make sure that the pool improvements and the things we were looking at there; we were doing long term planning for what the overall vision of the pool is.  Now that we’ve decided to move forward with the park and the pool project both, we need to undertake the formal design process, and get detailed drawings and thing like that together.

Tuesday evening’s Public Services Committee meeting is set for 6 PM in the City Council Chambers.  The agenda also includes an update on city crime statistics from Police Chief Christopher Yates.
