Many Jackson residents have shown up in support of the curfew proposal, but some citizens believe simply keeping children inside is not enough to sway all away from committing and becoming victims of violent crime. “They should have something constructive for the children to do if they’re going to compel them to stay inside. They just going to be destructive around the house and right there in the immediate neighborhood,” said Jackson resident Ms. Jones.The committee has been back and forth on what consequences children and parents could face. They say children will be picked up by law enforcement and brought to their guardian, and that the goal is not to fine and arrest citizens. “The first thing is getting their parents’ attention, so their parent will know that this parent is wrong,” Stokes said.The goal is to help parents teach children how to grow into functioning community members. “I, as a parent and a former teacher, our children are more easily influenced by their peers than by their parents, but it’s okay for you to say, you know that little, small voice, that’s the voice of God and reasoning,” said Jackson resident Elmira Johnson.The curfew is planned to be in place during school hours and before midnight every day of the week.
