HAVERHILL — Students in Shaun Ashworth’s AP Government class at Haverhill High School will hold a City Council candidate question and answer forum on Monday, Oct. 16, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the high school’s auditorium, 139 Monument St.

Students will be asking questions of each candidate for City Council. The public is invited to this free event.

In-person English classes

NORTH ANDOVER — Parents of North Andover students can enroll in free English classes that will run from the end of October through December.

Parents can come together to improve their English skills through conversation, reading and writing practices with a skilled instructor.

The sessions will be held Monday evenings from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Stevens Memorial Library, 345 Main St. Sessions are Oct. 23 and 30; Nov. 6, 13 and 20; and Dec. 4, 11 and 18.

Basic rights workshop planned

HAVERHILL — Haverhill SEPAC (Special Education Parent Advisory Council) will hold a basic rights workshop on Monday, Oct. 16, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in Haverhill High School’s library, 139 Monument St.

The free event is for parents of children with or may have special needs. Knowing basic rights helps parents better advocate for their child. Special Education attorney Holly Vietzke will discuss what you should be aware of and what to do if your child has a disability that affects any part of their educational experience. Please park in Lot E past the tennis courts. A Spanish translator will be present at this workshop.

Kindness for Colleen Day Oct. 22

ANDOVER — Oct. 22 marks the passing of Colleen Ritzer and her family and friends ask everyone in the community to perform a random act of kindness that day.

Ritzer was known for her kindness, zeal for life, teaching and love of family, according to the fund. Acts of kindness can be as simple as holding the door for someone or buying someone a cup of coffee.

Volunteer Expo slated for Oct. 18

HAVERHILL — The Greater Haverhill Chamber of Commerce will hold a Volunteer Expo on Wednesday, Oct. 18, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the UMass iHub, located on the third floor of the Harbor Place building at 2 Merrimack St.

This free event is open to students, seniors, or anyone looking to get involved with community service. Connect with local nonprofits to find out how you can volunteer with local communities.

Run for the Troops 5K

ANDOVER — Run for the Troops, a nonprofit that supports New England veterans organizations, will hold their annual 5k at The Park, 36 Bartlet St., Sunday, Nov. 12, at 9 a.m.

A brief ceremony will be held at the beginning of the day.

The event has raised over $500,000 for veterans programs since 2011.

School job fair planned at HHS

HAVERHILL — Haverhill’s School Department will hold a Job Fair on Tuesday, Oct. 24, from 2:30 to 5 p.m. in Haverhill High School’s library, 139 Monument St.

Openings include support staff, at risk liaisons, bus drivers and monitors, crossing guards, custodians, cafeteria helpers, nurses, paraprofessionals, and others.

Please park in Lot E behind the building.

Social Justice speaker series continues

ANDOVER — Temple Emanuel will hold another session of the Social Justice speaker series at the Temple, 7 Haggetts Pond Road, Sunday, Oct. 15, from 4 to 6 p.m. A presentation by Richard Cohen, formerly of the Southern Poverty Law Center, explore “Hate in America: Why It’s Getting Worse and What Can Be Done about It.”

The event will be possible held on Zoom as well as in person.

“We look forward to welcoming Richard Cohen to Temple Emanuel to share his insight from his years as the Southern Poverty Law Center and discuss what can be done about hate in America,” Rabbi Max Chaiken said.

“The Southern Poverty Law Center is an organization dedicated to fighting hate, teaching tolerance, and seeking justice for the most marginalized members of society,” according to a Temple release.

Free talk on the Science of Addiction

HAVERHILL — Northern Essex Community College will host a talk titled “The Science of Addiction and its Effect on the Developing Brain” on Tuesday, Oct. 24, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the C-Building, Lecture Hall A, 100 Elliott St. The public is invited.

This event is perfect for recovery coaches, parents, and others who are interested in understanding the science behind addiction and its effects.

Dr. Sunny Kung, medical director at the Merrimack Valley Bridge Clinic at Mass General Brigham Community Physicians and a board certified internist specializing in addictions, anti-racism and social justice, will discuss a variety of topics including: The role the brain plays in addictive behaviors; how does addiction work in the developing brain; what does it mean to call addiction a brain disorder and how does addiction hijack the brain.

This informative hour long presentation will begin the conversation around understanding the behavior of addiction and how it can be prevented and concluded with a question and answer session.
