Celebration of Life Held for Former Rome Mayor Carl J. Eilenberg | Community

ROME, N.Y. — A celebration of life took place this Sunday at the Rome Capitol Theatre to honor former Rome Mayor Carl J. Eilenberg.

Eilenberg passed away on Monday, June 10 at his home in Jensen Beach, F.L. at the age of 93.

Eilenberg was born in Syracuse, N.Y. on May 18, 1930 and spent his life as a free spirit who loved sports and loved everyone around him.

“It’s nice to be important, but it’s more important to be nice,” was Eilenberg’s favorite saying as he lived by it.

The Celebration of Life was arranged by Susan Eilenberg, Carl’s long time wife. The event was an opportunity to honor his legacy and accomplishments throughout his life in the City of Rome according to a statement from Rome Mayor Jacqueline Izzo.

Many in attendance spoke about how Mayor Eilenberg had an impact on their lives and how important he was to not only Romans, but those from Syracuse as well.

The program included speeches from the following individuals:

  • Michael Brick,
  • Rick Weltz,
  • Marissa Carollo,
  • Cindy Reynolds and Matt Moore,
  • Rome Mayor Jacqueline M. Izzo,
  • Ellie Bruce and Bill Fleet,
  • Scott Pitoniak,
  • Elisabeth Madin Swanson,
  • Tom Kenealy, 
  • The Hon. Judge David Hurd.

Eilenberg served three four-year terms as Mayor of Rome from 1980-1992.
