LITTLE ROCK (KATV) — Thursday marks the 187th anniversary of Arkansas becoming the 25th state to join the union.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the United States obtained the land that would be Arkansas from France as a part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803.
Originally spelled Arkansaw, the Arkansas Territory was organized from a part of the Missouri Territory on March 2, 1819, the website said.
The territory included the greater part of Oklahoma but was reduced to take its present boundary in 1824 and 1828.
On June 15, 1836, Arkansas was admitted into the union as the 25 state.
Arkansas seceded from the union in May 1861, then was readmitted in 1868.
Representative Steve Womack and Senator John Boozman made tweets celebrating the state’s birthday.
Today marks 187 years since Arkansas became the 25th state in 1836. Happy Birthday to the Natural State!” Rep. Womack said.
