One of the Marines killed in a helicopter crash in California earlier this week was from New Hampshire. Capt. Jack Casey, 26, of Dover, was one of five Marines killed in the crash, which occurred during stormy weather in the mountains outside of San Diego. The CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter was designed to fly through bad weather, even at night. Casey was one of the pilots. At the time of the crash, the crew was conducting routine flight training. The mayor of Dover said Casey and his family are well known, and his death has shaken the community.According to the U.S. Marine Corps, Casey joined the Marines on May 16, 2019, and was promoted to the rank of captain on Sept. 1, 2023.During his career, Casey earned the National Defense Service Medal.Casey went to St. Thomas Aquinas High School. The school’s president, Paul Marquis, said he left a positive mark on the school and led a life of service, even in those days.”That’s who Capt. Casey was,” Marquis said. “It’s tragic. It’s tragic, and to know someone who had such a great future was involved in this horrific accident is saddening.”Gov. Chris Sununu said in a statement. “Valerie and I are deeply saddened as we mourn the loss of these five Marines. Capt. Jack Casey’s death is a profound loss for his family, his community, New Hampshire, and the country.”The crash is under investigation, officials with the U.S. Marine Corps said. The other Marines were identified as:Lance Cpl. Donovan Davis, 21, of Olathe, Kansas, a CH-53E helicopter crew chief.Sgt. Alec Langen, 23, of Chandler, Arizona, a CH-53E helicopter crew chief.Capt. Benjamin Moulton, 27, of Emmett, Idaho, a CH-53E helicopter pilot. Capt. Miguel Nava, 28, of Traverse City, Michigan, a CH-53E helicopter pilot.
