After an error in voting during a regular council meeting, the Birmingham City Council selected Darrell O’Quinn as president in a special called meeting Friday. O’Quinn received five votes during the special meeting Friday morning. He got four during the regular council meeting Tuesday, more than others nominated, but not a majority of the nine-member council. The city’s legal team called a decision to name him president Tuesday a violation of the Mayor Council Act. “I think the clerk just simply made a mistake,” O’Quinn said. “My preference would have been that we had gotten it over with on Tuesday. The intervening time, it’s been a little bit stressful if I’m being totally transparent with you.”Councilor Clinton Woods is calling for an investigation into what lead to the voting error. “It’s important that we look into this, because we can’t take a violation of state law lightly,” Woods said. “So, we have got to do what we need to do to make sure that this never happens again.”O’Quinn is not opposed to Wood’s call. However, he believes the confusion may have come from parliamentary procedure being different than the Mayor Council Act. “That’s the likely outcome of any investigation was that it was just as a simple error based on two different sets of rules,” O’Quinn said. But there’s a lot of concerns, and I’ve heard some concerning things enough to move me to get into it and look into it.”Residents in attendance at the special called meeting hope the council will move forward united. “We know it was a little difficult for all the council people with everything, but we just want them to come back together,” Birmingham resident Richard Franklin said.
