California’s top law enforcement officer and elections chief on Monday sued the city of Huntington Beach to block a measure requiring voters to present IDs at polls for municipal elections.
The lawsuit, filed in California Superior Court of Orange County, said the voter ID requirement is preempted by state law and will only suppress voter participation without providing any local benefit.
The measure was approved by Huntington Beach voters in a March ballot initiative and allows the city to implement voter ID requirements beginning in 2026.
