Residents of Lancaster City are asking the city’s mayor for answers to solve homelessness on Wednesday, an issue that is growing in the downtown area. “That’s what’s scary, especially when you put your whole heart and soul into something. Saying goodbye is hard, but saying goodbye when you don’t want to is even harder,” said Timbrel Chyatee, owner of Chyatee in downtown.Mathew Cirigliano, a homeless man who frequents the area of Queen Street, admits unhoused people can cause chaos.”They have a lot of dysfunction more than just being in the way. With the fights and the arguments and everything else, there’s a lot of stuff going on,” he said, adding sometimes all that is needed is a little help.”Put a few of us on a payroll to clean up, act as security and make sure we know what’s going on. Kind of organize ourselves a little better,” Cirigliano said.Lancaster Mayor Danene Sorace said police are monitoring the situation and the city is partnering with organizations to ensure those in need can get assistance when needed.”I will continue to advance solutions in which we are meeting the needs of all of our community, recognizing it’s not going to be perfect every day,” she said.Sorace said there are outreach specialists who are working on getting people connected with resources and into housing. The mayor also said the city has no tolerance for illegal activity and to report to the police if illegal activity occurs.
