The Brockton Public Schools district is facing a multimillion deficit and the superintendent of schools is on medical leave, according to the mayor of the Massachusetts city.Mayor Robert Sullivan made the announcement following a four-hour emergency executive session of the Brockton School Committee on Thursday.According to Sullivan, who also serves as chair of the Brockton School Committee, it was recently brought to the committee’s attention that an approximate $14 million deficit exists for the Fiscal Year 2023 budget.Sullivan went on to state that Brockton Public Schools Superintendent Michael Thomas informed the committee that he would be out on an extended medical leave and that Thomas did not attend the emergency executive session Thursday night.”The committee is acutely focused on formulating and implementing a leadership plan that provides the support and services and the levels our students and families deserve,” Sullivan said.Sullivan said an emergency School Committee meeting is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Friday at Brockton High School, where committee members will further discuss next steps.”As mayor and a BPS alum, and a parent of a student in the BPS system, I’m extremely dismayed. Collectively, we are all dismayed by the situation, and we are committed to ensuring that we will rectify the situation, appoint new leadership and move forward with our strategy and our concise strategy to deliver the best schools for our teachers, our staff, our students, our parents and, of course, our guardians,” Sullivan said.The first day of classes for Brockton Public Schools students in grades 1-12 is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 6.
