Bryan Brinyark will be the Republican nominee for the House District 16 seat after defeating Brad Cox in a special election runoff on Tuesday.
The race was very close according to unofficial results. Brinyark received 1,706 votes totaling 52.75 percent and Cox received 1,528 votes totaling 47.25 percent. District 16 encompasses parts of Fayette County, Jefferson County and Tuscaloosa County and it was the voters from Tuscaloosa that helped propel Brinyark to his narrow victory.
Brinyark will now prepare to face off against the Democratic nominee for District 16, John Underwood, during the special general election. That election will be held on January 9, 2024.
The District 16 seat was formerly held by Republican Kyle South from 2015 until June. South resigned in June to serve as the President and CEO of the Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama.
Brinyark is an attorney and has held multiple positions as a municipal judge. Brinyark posted on Facebook after the victory thanking House District 16.
After Brinyark won the Alabama Republican Party released a statement congratulating him and will support him in the upcoming general election.

Brinyark has received an endorsement from the Business Council of Alabama. His campaign will comtinue to center on his devotion to the district, his experience with the law as an attorney and his conservative family values.
