BETHESDA — The village welcomed a new mayor last week with the swearing-in of Bob Flanagan during the first council meeting of 2024.

Flanagan previously served as mayor in 2000 and was elected to the post in November with 232 votes over fellow candidate Linda Reeves’ 114 votes. Mayor Samantha Burkhead chose not to run again to pursue a second term.

Also sworn in Wednesday was the newest elected council member, Jordan Castello, who ran unopposed and was elected with 220 votes. Castello previously served as a Bethesda councilwoman.

Village Solicitor Michael Shaheen also swore in Colby Rinehart to an open council seat. Three people had shown interest in the vacancy. Chuck Little received a nomination, but there was not a second. Michael McCormick had expressed interest but was not nominated.

Council voted 4-1 for Rhinehart. Castello opposed his appointment.

Councilman Jay Van Horn was selected as president of council. Shaheen also received a new two-year contract.

The solicitor thanked the mayor and council for the ability to continue working with the village.

Flanagan announced he will have regular office hours at the municipal building and is available by phone at 740-484-1250. His hours are 10 a.m. to noon Mondays; 5-7 p.m. Tuesdays; 10 a.m. to noon Thursdays; 5-6 p.m. Fridays; and 11 a.m. to noon Saturdays.
