Baltimore mayor calls for complete overhaul of juvenile justice system, sparking controversy

Advocates for juvenile justice reform were turning their heads on Friday when Mayor Brandon Scott called for an overhaul of the state’s juvenile justice system.

“We have to build a juvenile justice system that works from the ground up, every portion has to be looked at. I’ve been talking about that for years now,” Scott said.

Juvenile crime like shootings and carjackings has been skyrocketing in Baltimore as leaders scramble for solutions.

“To hear him say that infuriates me,” said activist Kinji Scott, who has long called for an overhaul of the system.

Mayor Scot also renewed his call for more aid from Washington in the crime fight.

“Nowhere in America is exempt from gun violence and until we deal with this issue as a country, cities and states will have to deal with it and that’s not enough,” said Mayor Scott.

But Kinji Scott doesn’t think the mayor has what it takes to find a solution.

“Everyone needs to do something except Brandon,” said Kinji Scott. “What is Brandon Scott going to do about crime? We’ve yet to see that.”
