BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/FOX58) — The Bakersfield City Council approved new security measures security measures in the council chambers and other public city buildings.

According to the resolution passed tonight, anyone attending a public meeting or entering a city building will be screened by on-site security.
In recent weeks, the council has begun placing metal detectors at the entrance to the chambers to screen for prohibited items.
Some attendees questioned the extent of the prohibited items list, which includes illegal drugs and ammunition, but also silverware, food, and drink, or signs larger than a sheet of paper.

The measure passed unanimously in the consent agenda. City officials said the new measures will not have an immediate cost to taxpayers.
However, future equipment purchases and building improvements can be brought back to the council for approval.
