ATTLEBORO — The city council this week unanimously approved an ordinance establishing a sustainability commission for Attleboro.
The commission will consist of nine members appointed by the mayor and confirmed by the council. Each member will serve a term of three years on a rotating basis.
Committee members who wrote the ordinance under the guidance of former councilor Mike Davis applauded loudly when the ordinance was passed Tuesday.
Attleboro joins 58% of other Massachusetts communities that already have sustainability commissions.
Last week, Davis defined “sustainability” as “being able to replenish what you consume.”
He pointed out that 30% of food and 50% of all energy is wasted.
“We consume three times what can be replenished,” Davis said.
He appeared before the council to show a five-minute video produced by Attleboro High School students that endorsed the establishment of the commission.
Davis said the commission has already come up with 120 recommendations.
“We’re coming in a little late, but we’re coming in hard,” he said last week.
The key to accomplishing the recommendations will be grant writing to fund them, Davis said.
