Atlantic City mayor to outline 2024 budget today

ATLANTIC CITY — Mayor Marty Small Sr. will provide an overview of his 2024 budget during a news conference at 10 a.m. Wednesday, and promises to also announce something big.

“Mayor Small has some major financial announcements to share that will impact both the Atlantic City taxpayers and city employees,” according to a news release from the mayor’s office.

Also participating Wednesday will be city Business Administrator Anthony Swan, Chief Financial Officer Toro Aboderin and auditor Leon Costello.

The mayor is no doubt hoping for a smoother budget process this year than last May, when council first voted 5-4 not to approve the budget, even though it contained a property tax cut.

The tax rate went down five cents from $1.5997 per $100 of assessed property value to $1.5474 per $100.

ATLANTIC CITY — Feuding Democrats on City Council may have voted down the city’s 2023 budget…

The state, which oversees the city under the 2016 state takeover law, then threatened to take away the property tax cut, prompting three council members to change their votes. The budget eventually passed 7-0.

The three were Democratic at-large Councilmen George Tibbitt and Bruce Weekes, and lone Republican and 6th Ward Councilman Jesse Kurtz.

The owner of a property valued at $125,000 saw their local taxes decrease by about $60.38, according to Small.

The budget news conference will be held in Council Chambers on the second floor of City Hall, 1301 Bacharach Blvd., and will be carried on the mayor’s Facebook page at facebook.com/martysmall.
