Arkansas State Hall of Honor member Fred Shepherd dies


JONESBORO, Ark. (KAIT) – Basketball fans are mourning the loss of one of Arkansas State’s best players.

According to online accounts by friends and family, Fred Shepherd, who was a graduate of Marked Tree High School, reportedly died Friday night.

Shepherd, an A-State Hall of Honor member, played with the then-Indians from 1989 to 1993 and was a 1,000-point scorer. He is top 10 in program history in rebounds (782, 9th), blocks (76, 7th), and field goal percentage (.611, 4th). His 69.2 percent shooting mark in the 1990-91 season is the second-best in school history.

The 6-6 forward was a two-time All-Sun Belt First Team selection, earning the honor in 1992 and 1993.

Following his graduation, he played professional ball for the United States Basketball League and internationally in New Zealand and Spain.
