ALL RIGHT. WELCOME BACK TO 40/29 NEWS ON THE RECORD WITH DR. KAREN SIEBEL, THE POLITILCA EXPERT WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS. AND LET’S TALK ABO THEUT RUNOFF ELECTIONS, DR. SIEBOLD, WE WILL BE SEEING SEVERAL RUNOFF ELECTIONS, RACES NOW IN JUNE. SOME OF THE RACES ARE HEADED TO THAT RUNOFF, INCLUDING SEVERAL REPUBLICAN, STATE AND LOCAL POSITIONS. SO WHO EXACTLY HEADS INTO A RUNOFF AND WHAT IS THE PROCESS LIKE? YEAH. SO WHAT ELSE ARE INTERESTING, INTERESTGIN ANIMALS IN THE POLITICAL SCIENCE WORLD? CERTAINLY SOME STASTE REQUIRE THAT YOU RECEIVE 50 PLUS 1% OF THE VOTE IN ORRDE TO WIN THAT PARTY’S NOMINATION. AND IF NOT, THEN YOU’RE GOING TO FACE A RUNOFF. AND SO RUNOFFS ARE, YOU KNOW, TNO DESIRED BY THE CANDIDATES BECAUSE THEY HAVE TO CONTINUE TO WORK. THEY KIND OF HAVTOE CONTINUE TO HIT THE PAVEMENT AND THE TURNOUT FOR THOSE ARE NOT GOING TO BE AS HIGH BECAUSE THERE’S NOT AS MUCH ATTENTION ON THAT RUNOFF. THERE’S NOT AS MHUC MEDIA ATTENTION, NOT AS MUCH AWARENESS. AND YOU’RE NOT SHOWING UP TO VOTEOR F THOSE MAJOR NATIONAL ELECTIONS FOR THE SENATE ORHE T GUBERNATORIAL RACE, THOSE SMALLER STATE AND LOCAL ELECTIONSYPIC TALLY RIDE THE COATTAILS OF THOSE ELECTIONS. SO THE RUNOFF FOR THE TURNOUT FOR THESE RUNOFFS WILL LIKELY BE SMALLER. AND THE DECISION ON WHO’S GOING TO WIN WILL BE A MUCH SMALLER PERCENTAGE THAN WHAT YOU MIGHT SEE A TYPICAL PRIMARY OR GENERAL ELECTION. SO LIKY ELTHE RUNOFFS WILL INCLUDE TWO PEOPLE. AND SO EVERY SINGLE VOTE COUNTS AS IT ABSOLUTELY. AND GETTING THEM TO THE POLLS IS, LIKE I SAID, MORE DIFFICULT BECAUSE YOU HAVE THESE OTHER RACES, YOU KNOW, AND PEOPLE GET ELECONTI FATIGUE. YOU KNOW, WE’VE BEEN THROUGH THE PRIMARY WE KNOW THERE’S A GENERAL ELECTION COMING UP AND THEY DON’T NECESSARILY SEE THESE LOL CAAND STATE RACES AS IMPORTANT, BUT THEY ARE SOTIMEMES MORE IMPORTANT WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT THE TYPES OF DECISIONS BEING MADE AT THE LOCAL LEVEL OVER PROPERTY TAXES, CURRICULUM AND EDUCATION AND INFRASTRUCTURE. AND SO IT’ANS UNFORTUNATE BUT IT IS KIND OF THE TREND FOR RUFFNO ELECTIONS. AND THE CANDIDATES REALLY HATE TO HAVE DO THIS, TOO, BECAUSE THEY’D RATHERE B PUTTING THEIR EFFORTS INTO THE GENERAL ELECTION. AND THEY’RE STILL, YOU KNOW, IT ‘T ’S KIND OF LIKE HAVING TO GO TO SUMMER SCHOOL, BASALICLY, IS HOW I WOULD EQUATE A RUNOFF ELECTION FOR THE CANDIDATES. AND IT IS HAPPENG ININ THE SUMMER WHERE A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE NOT EXACTLY ALWAYS PAYING ATTENTION TO HAPPENING. DR. SIEBOLD, WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST SURPRISERO FM THE ARKANSASRI PMARIES THIS WEEK? I THINK OUR BIGGEST SURPRISE IS THAT SENATOR BOZEMAN DID NOT HAVE TO FACE A RUNOFF AND THAT HIS TOPIC, HIS INSURGENTS CANDID CANDIDATE, THE PERSON THATAS W THREATENING THE MOST. JAKE BECKETT, DIDN’T WIN AS MUCH SUPPORT FROM THE POLLS AS EXPECTED, ESPECIALLY GIVEN HE HAD ALL OF THIS SUPERPAC SUPPORT. HE HAD A SERUP PAC FOR MEOR THAN $1,000,000 IN ADVERTISING IN THIS STATE, AND HE REALLY WAS COMING HARD AT BOZEMAN IN TERMS OF HIS CONSERVATIVE CREDENTIALS. BUT HE WHAT THAT MONEY, IT JUST SHOWS DOESN’T ALYSWA MATTER. LIKE YOU CAN SPEND A LOT OF MONEY, BUT IT’S REALLY DIFFICULT TO TAKE OUT AN INCUMBENT. THAT’S OUR BIGGEST LESSON FROM THE ARKAASNS PRIMARIES, ESPECIALLY ONE LIKE BOZEMAN. HE WAS FAIRLY POPULAR WITH THE VOTERS IN YEARS PAST, HAS BEEN PRETTY NON-CONTROVERSIAL, REALLY KIND OF STAYS OUT OF THE SPOTLIGHT. HE’S A WORKHORSE, NOT A SHOW HORSE INTO SOME WOULD SAY, WELL, THAT MIGHT HAVE ACTUALLY, YOU KN,OW BEEN SOMETHING THAT HE WAS WORRIED ABOUT IS THAT HE’S NOT OUT THERE IN THE SPOTLIGHT AS MUCH, BUHIT S WORKHORSE CREDENTIALS AND HIS POPULARITY AND ETH ESTABLISHMENT COMING OUT TO SUPPORT HIM IN THE LAST FEW WEEKS WAABS LE TO REALLY HELP HIM PULL OFF A BIG WIN, WHICH HE NEEDED GOING INTO THE GENERAL ELECTION AND THE OTHER CONGRESSIONAL RACES FOR THE HOUSOFE RREEPSENTATIVES. NOT MUCH COMPETITION THERE. WHEN YOU LOOK AT THE RESULTS, RIGHT? YEAH. AND THAT’S NOT IN THE LAST FEW CYCLES IN ARKANSAS, THERE REALLY HASN’T BEEN AS MUCH DEMOCRATIC COMPETITION. SO IN SOME CASES, THOSE PRIMARIES HAVE BEEN VERY THEY’RE NOT RECEIVING A LOOFT ATTENTION. THERE’S NOT A LOT OF COMPETITION IN THE REPUBLICAN SIDE AND. WOMACKND A SOMETIMES SOME OF THE OTHER REPRESENTATIVES HAVEN’T EVEN FACED A CONTESTED, I THINK IT WAS DISTRICT FOUR, THERE WAS WEST BRUCE WESTERMAN HAD CONTESTED. SO YOU KNOW, THOSE DON’T STIR UP A LOT OF ATTENTION. THEY’RE PRETTY PREDICTABLE. I DON’T THINK WITAS EXPECTED THAT WOMACK WAS GOING TO TO BE PULLED OUT OF THE PRIMARY THIS TIME AROUND. Arkansas’ 2022 primary runoffs are underway. The guide below will help you learn when and where to cast your ballot as well as answer other questions about the elections.Primary elections were held in May.
