On Thursday, 18 Republican legislators called for the immediate resignation of a Board of Corrections member.Alonza Jiles has not been found liable in any civil cases against him and he’s denied the allegations. The legislators joined Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders in calling for Jiles to leave his position on the Board of Corrections.Multiple Federal civil lawsuits claim Jiles was told about child abuse by victims at the Lord’s Ranch in Northeast Arkansas and did not do anything to stop it. The child treatment facility is now closed. “Everything we do in this building is political of certain degree. But I don’t think it’s politics to say that there should be accountability and that we shouldn’t guarantee that the public can have trust and confidence in the people who are in these positions. We can all be removed from our position with a vote of the people, Mr. Jiles can’t.” Sen. Ben Gilmore, District 1 said. “I think if it if it was not political, the board of corrections would have already called for his resignation is it’s a distraction to their efforts to take care of the Department of Corrections for the state. So if politics weren’t involved, I think that action would have already taken place.” Rep. Howard Beaty, District 95 said.In a statement from Corrections chairman Benny Magness states “Jiles is entitled to his day in court and that some are trying to deprive him of that right by trying to force him to resign.”
