Arkansas governor renews waiver for tornado housing units • Arkansas Advocate

Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders has renewed a waiver for the transport of housing units as part of the ongoing tornado recovery efforts.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is delivering temporary housing units to assist Arkansans impacted by the severe weather and tornadoes that struck central Arkansas on Mar. 31, 2023. The storms killed at least five people and damaged hundreds of homes and businesses.

Sanders first suspended the requirements for transporting FEMA housing in June and most recently extended the waiver in February.

According to this week’s executive order, commercial carriers engaged in transportation of FEMA temporary housing units shall be temporarily exempt from certain state laws governing escort and curfew requirements for oversize and overweight vehicles on highways in Arkansas. The exemption will not cover loads greater than 16 feet wide.

The executive order will remain in effect until Aug. 18, unless terminated or renewed by a subsequent order.
