“Trump is politically, morally responsible for much of what has happened, but in terms of criminal liability, I think the committee has a long way to go to establish that,” Hutchinson said in an interview with Fox News Sunday.

Hutchinson emphasized that Jan. 6 was a “costly error” for democracy and called for the Republican Party to understand the events and learn from them.

“Republicans need to do a lot of soul searching as to what is the right thing here and what is the right thing for our democracy in the future,” Hutchinson told anchor Bret Baier, “and not simply adhere to the basic instincts of some of our base.”

The Jan. 6 Select Commission offered its opening statements on Tuesday, making a case that the former President was involved in planning the events during the protest.

Republicans have begun to challenge the narrative, including Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH).

“This committee has altered evidence and lied to the American people about it, so much so that they had to issue a statement which says, ‘We regret the error,’ which is government-speak for, ‘We got caught lying,'” Jordan claimed during a Sunday show appearance.
