An Arkansas senator has defended Donald Trump’s mental faculties amid a series of gaffes by the presidential hopeful and insisted he is ‘110 percent’ comfortable with the former president’s abilities.
On CBS Sunday, Dan Sullivan leapt to Trump’s defense after he was presented with a video clip where Trump appeared to confuse Biden with Barack Obama and incorrectly suggested the US has troops on the ground in Ukraine.
Sullivan stated there is ‘no comparison’ to Trump rival Joe Biden, who has himself been criticized over his cognitive function.
‘Are you comfortable about his mental fitness?’ CBS’ Margaret Brenann asked Sullivan after playing the footage taken at a rally in Virginia.
‘Compared to the current president? One hundred ten percent,’ the Republican senator replied.
‘And as your polling shows, I think the American people have real concerns where President Biden is with regard to his fitness for office, particularly his mental acuity.
‘And relative to President Biden — or relative to former President Trump — I don’t even think it’s a close call when you see the two in action.’
The poll Sullivan cited showed just 32 percent of voters believe Biden has the necessary mental and cognitive abilities to be president.
The same poll showed that 51 percent of voters also don’t believe Trump has the necessary mental faculties to do the job.
But Sullivan, who has endorsed 77-year-old Trump, hit back when Brennan asked him to confirm there are no US troops in Ukraine.
‘I would go back to who is demonstrating more mental fitness to be the president and I don’t even think it’s a close call between President Trump and President Biden right now,’ he said.
Trump made the Obama blunder at the rally on Saturday night.
‘Putin has so little respect for Obama that he’s starting to throw around the nuclear word. You heard that. Nuclear. He’s starting to talk nuclear weapons today,’ he said.
Trump’s recent gaffe is not the first time the Republican frontrunner has confused Obama and Biden on the campaign trail.
However, in January, he claimed this is a deliberate tactic to demonstrate his belief ‘Obama is running the show.’
Other gaffes have included mixing up GOP rival Nikki Haley with former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
Biden, 81, has also committed his fair share of flubs in recent months.
Two weeks ago, he appeared to get his facts muddled once again as he confused a Congressional funding bill for Ukraine with that of NATO.
Biden was speaking to reporters as he walked from his motorcade when he got his facts confused as he called for ‘Congress to come home and pass the legislation funding NATO.’
The $95 billion aid package the president was speaking about would see $61 billion sent to Ukraine – which it not part of NATO.
It was the latest gaffe made by the president, who recently mixed up the names of world leaders, including France’s former president Francois Mitterrand, who died in 1996, with its current president, Emmanuel Macron.
The Department of Justice even found in its report into Biden’s handling of classified documents that he has ‘diminished faculties and a faulty memory.’
The probe revealed he left Afghan files next to a dog bed in his garage, forgot when his son Beau died and couldn’t remember when he was vice president.
Biden angrily refuted the claims in the report by Special Counsel Robert Hur that suggested his memory was failing.
He channeled all his rage at the reporters in front of him, setting out his fury at the idea, reported by Hur, that he could not remember the date of his beloved son Beau’s death.
It was a forceful and impressive performance right up until the point when it wasn’t.
After apparently finishing the question-and-answer portion of the appearance, he made for the door before being tempted back to answer one more inquiry about Israel.
