Arceneaux elected mayor of City of Shreveport


SHREVEPORT, La. (KSLA) – Voters flocked to the polls Saturday, Dec. 10 for Louisiana’s runoff elections.

One of the main decisions on the ballot was that of Shreveport mayor.

Attorney and former Shreveport Councilman Tom Arceneaux (R) and state Sen. Greg Tarver (D) faced off for the title, with Arceneaux coming out on top by 4,726 votes. He won with 20,800 votes (56.4%), while Tarver had 16,074 votes (43.6%), according to complete but unofficial results.

“ This is not about me, this is about the people of Shreveport. You know, we have tonight looked beyond historical barriers and distinctions,” Arceneaux said as he celebrated with his victory speech. “We have a new future in the city of Shreveport, it will look different from what it did in the past.”

During his concession speech, Tarver said: “I am more concerned about the city of Shreveport and the future of the city of Shreveport; all of us must be concerned with that. We got to move forward. Anything that I can do or my family can do to help Tom run this city, we will support him all the way.”

Tarver’s term as a state senator expires Jan. 8. 2024. He is term limited and cannot seek re-election in next year’s legislative elections.

BY THE NUMBERS

Going into Saturday’s election, 122,157 Shreveport voters were qualified to cast ballots in the mayoral race.

✅ Casting ballots Saturday were 36,874 voters, for an unofficial turnout of 30.2%.

✅ Of the 122,157 eligible voters:

• 62,338 (51%) were Democrats,

• 28,532 (23.4%) were Republicans, and,

• 31,287 (25.6%) listed their party affiliation as other.

Arceneaux is the first Republican to hold the office of Shreveport mayor since Robert W. “Bo” Williams’ term expired Nov. 24, 1998:
