Alabama voters support Tuberville military hold abortion protest, poll says | News | #republicans | #Alabama | #GOP

New statewide polling in Alabama shows that Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) has the support of the majority of Alabama voters and that more residents there support his hold on military promotions than don’t.

Tuberville began the hold in protest after the Pentagon began reimbursing service members and their dependents for costs incurred traveling out of state for abortions. Tuberville contends the policy, adopted after the Supreme Court reversed Roe v. Wade, violates the Hyde Amendment’s prohibition on most taxpayer funding of abortion.

The Alabama Republican has weathered attacks from Democrats and members of his own party for his hold on the military promotions, which he says he will release if Congress votes on a change to the Pentagon’s policy. He is holding up more than 300 promotions from quickly advancing.

Polling obtained by the Washington Examiner that was conducted by WPA Intelligence, a conservative polling and data firm, showed 50% of registered Alabama voters have heard “a lot or some” about Tuberville’s hold on military promotions and that 45% of registered voters support his stance, compared to only 33% supporting the Biden administration’s policy.

The poll was conducted between Aug. 23 and 24 and on Aug. 26. It surveyed 500 registered Alabama voters and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.4 percentage points.

These numbers contradict another poll pushed by VoteVets, a liberal veteran organization that opposes the holds, that showed that 58% of Alabama voters want Tuberville to relinquish his hold on military promotions.

The VoteVets poll also showed that Alabama voters viewed Tuberville less favorably because of the holds. This is also contradicted by the WPA poll.

The new polling showed that Tuberville holds 52% support among registered Alabama voters, compared to Democrats only holding 33% support. It also shows his net favorability rating is at 40% compared to his net unfavorability rating of 36%.

Usually, votes on military promotions advance quickly and in a bipartisan fashion. But since March, Tuberville has objected every time one has been called to the floor.

Earlier this month, the Alabama Republican Party Executive Committee passed a resolution condemning President Joe Biden and the Pentagon’s abortion policy and supporting Tuberville’s hold on the military promotions.

“The Alabama Republican Party calls on the Biden administration to reverse the policy of using taxpayer money to fund abortion-related expenses against the will of the people, and thanks Senator Tommy Tuberville for his stand against this flawed policy,” the resolution reads.
