The leadership change in the Alabama Democratic Party is not going as smoothly as Democrats may have hoped, and party chairman Randy Kelley made it public the night before voters head to the polls.

In a memo sent to members of the Alabama Democratic Party’s Executive Committee and county chairs on Monday, Kelley criticized his party’s vice chairwoman Tabitha Isner claiming her correspondence to party members was not authorized and was an effort to “frustrate, undermine, interfere and prevent” his party from “moving forward.”

The memo was first reported by Alabama Political Reporter’s Josh Moon and verified by 1819 News.

“Yes. It’s over!” a party executive committee member said to 1819 News when asked about the inner-party turmoil.

Earlier this year, the Alabama Democratic Party executive committee elected Kelley to replace State Rep. Chris England (D-Tuscaloosa), who did not seek reelection, as its chairman. The election of Kelley signaled Joe Reed’s return to power as the de facto leader of the Alabama Democratic Party.

Isner dismissed Kelley’s memo as “silly.”

In-state Democrats are expected to struggle in what will likely be a national election favorable to the Republican Party.
