Democrat Marilyn Lands won a special election in Alabama on Tuesday, scoring a state House seat in a long-held Republican district after running her campaign on IVF and abortion rights. Lands defeated Republican and Madison City Council member Teddy Powell in the state’s 10th district by a margin of approximately 25 percent, according to The Washington Post. The win was also predicted by CNN. The district, located in northern Alabama, was narrowly won by Donald Trump in 2020, the outlet reported. “From what I heard from the voters at the polls I was at, [reproductive rights] was a really big factor. And so many women came out. I had a woman with her young daughter wanting her to see history being made,” Lands told The Washington Post on Tuesday night. In a statement to Alabama Daily News, Powell said, “The voters have spoken and I’m honored to have been considered for this office. I wish Mrs. Lands the absolute best as she goes on to serve the people of District 10 in the House of Representatives.” In a post on X, Alabama Democrats rejoiced: “This is a victory for Democrats in Alabama and for women’s right to choose! The Tide is Turning.” The shock flip gives hope to Democrats that voters upset with the U.S. Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade will reflect their opinions at the polling booth.
